During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
