Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
